In Italy you can have either a religious marriage or a civil one, or, if you prefer, you can mix up both things. Whatever form you choose, the documents necessary to have your marriage acknowledged by your home country can vary a lot, depending on the ceremony and on your nationality.

Anyway, some basic info:
Civil marriage
The civil marriage is the one legally recognized by the Italian law, and it will have the same validity in your home country. The documents you need will depend on your nationality, and it will be our care to collect the needed papers and to coordinate the work of the Italian registry office with the offices in your country. Only keep in mind that the registry office in Italy generally asks for a fee, which can vary a lot, depending on the territory the office refers to. Anyway this will be arranged before the ceremony, as to be sure that everything is in order on the date of your wedding and to give you since the beginning a clear idea of the total costs. Differently than in other nations, for the Italian law a wife keeps her own surname, but it will be possible to change this aspect in your country once you are back.
Church ceremony
A church ceremony can take place only after the civil one, which is legally recognized. Therefore you can either marry previously in your country or have both celebrations directly in Italy. You can choose any location for a Protestant or an Anglican wedding, while a Catholic one can be held only in a consecrated building, like a church or a monastery.
Wedding of concordat
A wedding of concordat can be a very practical compromise solution. Thanks to the agreements between the Vatican and the Italian State, during a church marriage the priest can in fact perform also the civil marriage, which will be fully acknowledged by the law.
Symbolic marriage
A symbolic marriage offers the most of freedom to your desires, since it can be performed wherever, by a master of ceremony at your choice.
